“Unscene Images” Exhibition
July 30 – August 19th 2011 – Art Space, Paraparaumu Library
“Unscene Images” is the culmination of an initial body of work in which the “Unscene” in the night landscape is revealed.
Last year I took a shot at night with impressive results, mainly from a aesthetic point of view. “Ah I thought maybe this is the point of deference I have been looking for with my work”
I continued to explore the ”Unscene” landscape, in the pursuit of making the most of the “point of difference”. Initially my technical skills were challenged, a few chats with friends and some persistence paid off. I soon discovered that if taking advantage of the moonlight it enhanced the images in a special way. The night “expedition” becomes centered around 2-3 days either side of the full moon. The moon itself appears only in one image.
It was during these photographic “expeditions”, I considered the fact that I had become engaged in something more than taking pretty pictures at night. In revaluing the “Unscene” landscape I became aware it was a metaphor for what has become be a part of my life..
Through various life events over the last few years, much of the inner, previously ”Unscene” landscape became revealed to me. Resulting in a huge shift in all area of my life, new direction in career, new location and a completely different perspective on my spiritual beliefs. Happily I felt I was no long in as much darkness and my depression, a long time “companion”, began to lift and has continued to do so as the process has continued.
While coming to this realization. I came to another, which is actually in contrast with the original idea…
The images in the collection are taken at night with a long exposure – up to 10 minutes. At one level this is is not very long – but it’s long enough to capture change in the scene during that time, much depending on the wind and its action on the waves and the sky etc..
I guess to sum it up succinctly – I have slowed down long enough to contemplate what has been revealed to me and is now scene. Ironically the power and courage needed to continue making real change comes a power in my life I choose to call god, who’s true essence is “Unscene” but the fruits of which are scene and can experienced only if I rake the time to spend with the “Unscene”.
I would like to thank Glen Howey for his support and encouragement during the last few months as a mate and mentor in developing the technical aspects of this work.
Mel Philips and MJ at the Photoschool, Raumati for use of their computer and equipment and support.
A very special thanks to my Mum, for her love and support.
And to the “Unscene” great big thanks for all you have revealed to me.
A special note that 10%of all sales will be given to Te Nikau Training Center (Residential Drug and Alcohol center in Paraparumu)

Very Pleasing Night Landscape – Kapiti Coast New Zealand
Last night on the way home from a commercial photography shoot, I noticed what I thought could be a good opportunity for a night landscape shot. I stopped the car and found a good vantage point from which to take the photo.
I was just about to leave and go home when I heard a truck coming.. ah a light trail in the shot would be cool.. sure enough I got a cool red light trail. The light gullies on the hills are illuminated by very large “work lights” used while work was being carried out on the main trunk railway high on the hillside.
I am well pleased with the final result. I love the way the lights from Paekakariki, Raumati and Paraparumu is reflected in the sky to give the photosa great moody aspect and increased the overall appeal of the photos.
